7 Ways to Celebrate Sun-Filled Spring, Friends, Family, and Moms at McCormick

Posted May 3, 2019

Every day spent with those you love counts as a special day. But in May, celebrating Mother’s Day is an extra special occasion.  The timing is perfect, as McCormick’s May weather is sunny and refreshing.   For those who are apart from their mom, you can still relish these experiences to celebrate this sun-filled spring season of cheer and vitality.   It’s a great opportunity to take a much-deserved break!

If you’re looking for ideas, here are some of our favorite things to do this weekend at or close to McCormick.

Dinner and a movie (or entire day trip!) in Gig Harbor

The quaint “little” town of Gig Harbor is a fast and easy getaway from McCormick, located just minutes away. If you only have a few hours, take in dinner and a movie at the state-of-the-art Galaxy Theatre at Uptown Gig Harbor. Galaxy has one of the few IMAX theaters in the Puget Sound region, but even the regular theater experience at Galaxy is memorable — dramatic sound, unobstructed view of the screen and — possibly the best part — cushy, reclining chairs.

For dinner, choices are tough because Gig Harbor has so many great options. In Uptown alone, there are several excellent options, like Blazing Onion, Pizzeria Fondi and Green House, among others. Plus, Ben & Jerri’s or Menchi’s (nearby) has dessert covered, and Cutter’s Point Coffee gives your caffeine fix. There are close to another dozen options in the uptown area alone — and we haven’t even covered downtown and other areas yet!

If you could spare an entire day –  there are plenty of places to add to your itinerary in Gig Harbor. These are just some options:

  • Downtown shopping — visit boutiques, art galleries, and unique shops.
  • Uptown Shopping shop your heart away!
  • Waterfront sightseeing — take a leisurely stroll to enjoy the postcard-perfect views of the harbor and the sailboats, with a backdrop of the dreamy Mt. Rainier.
  • Historic attractions — check out the must-see attractions for history buffs, Skansie Brothers Netshed, the Gig Harbor BoatShop and the Harbor History Museum.
  • Indoor recreation — if it’s been ages since you’ve tried your hand at bowling, check out Duckpin bowling at Ocean5 (and for a real trip down memory lane, enjoy the arcade games while there).
  • Tasting rooms — visit the popular tasting room of local microbrewery 7 Seas Brewing or the one-of-a-kind Heritage Distilling
  • Take a Gondola Ride – wish you could transport yourself to Venice, Italy?  You can, in Gig Harbor!  Enjoy a fantastic gondola ride through the stunning Harbor.  This experience has been featured in many news stories! From the Kitsap Sun,  to the front page of the Tacoma News Tribune, to KOMO news.

Olalla Winery

For locally made wine, then Olalla Winery is your destination. You can stroll the grounds and even have a picnic — and, of course, sample some wines.  Olalla is just minutes from McCormick.

Since its inception in 2008, the winery’s been fermenting grapes using an ancient method that originated centuries ago in Greece and Rome. Make sure to visit with the winemaker and learn more about this fascinating tradition.

The winery has regularly scheduled wine tastings, plus live music on Fridays. You may also want to come back in summer for one of the popular Dinner in the Vineyard events, a unique, Tuscan-style experience in the midst of the vineyard and gardens.

Elandan Gardens

For those who love to garden, the gorgeous Elandan Gardens is a truly inspirational experience. Elandan is home to a waterfront garden that features a world-class bonsai collection. Landscape artist Dan Robinson is a bonsai pioneer whose trees are sought after as far as China, and the Elandan bonsais mingle with points, waterfalls, sculptures and other plants.

Once you’re done marveling at the bonsai collection and the waterfront gardens, make sure to stop at the gift shop and gallery. You may just find a treasure from around the world that would make a fun gift to celebrate.

Bremerton Waterfront

And since the stroll through Elandan will no doubt leave you hungry, end your trip with a quick drive to the Bremerton waterfront for dinner. Anthony’s is a great choice if you want to have a beautiful view, but you’ll find several other restaurants downtown.  The Boatshed is also a favorite with a great setting and seafood choices, just across the Manette Bridge.
